FAQ
Is The Sugar Queen a continuation of Garden Spells? Will there ever be a Garden Spells sequel?
Answer/Hide
I love that readers ask this question. I had no idea people would care so much about these characters, enough to want to see their stories continued. The Sugar Queen isn't a continuation of Garden Spells, but there’s a possibility of a Garden Spells sequel (or maybe a prequel) in the future. It might take a while. My next few books are either already written or already in the pipeline.
Are the dishes Claire creates in Garden Spells real? If so, where can I find them? Answer/Hide
I've had a lot of people ask, so I've compiled some recipes of real dishes made with edible flowers mentioned in Garden Spells here [Recipes].
Where can I find more about edible flowers and their properties? Answer/Hide
My research began with medicinal and folkloric uses of edible flowers...of course, I ended up on a crazy, fictional tangent and I took great liberties with the magical flowers in Garden Spells...
but a wonderful starting point is Botanical.com,
which gives histories and medicinal uses for plants, herbs and flowers. There's even a link for recipes.
I've never heard of some of the candy mentioned in The Sugar Queen. How do I find out more? Answer/Hide
Click on the Candy page. There's an image of every sweet in the book.
What is Bantam Discovery?
Answer/Hide
It's a great new program at Bantam Dell that simultaneously releases a book in both trade paperback and mass market paperback. The goal is to let the reader choose the format he/she likes best, to reach as wide an audience as possible. Beginning April 29, 2008, Garden Spells will be available in both paperback formats, as well as hardcover.
What is your next book about? When will it be released?
Answer/Hide
The next book has romance and magic and, of course, another quintessential Southern setting. It's also a primer on North Carolina barbeque, a religious experience around here. It will be released in 2009. I'll keep you updated!
When are your next appearances? Will you be coming to my city?
Answer/Hide
I try to keep an updated list of signings and appearances on my News page. If you'd like me to come to your city, let your local bookstores know!
How long did it take for you to get published?
Answer/Hide
I graduated from college in 1994, and that’s when I started writing seriously. I sold a few small things along the way, but Garden Spells didn’t sell until 2006. That’s twelve years writing as close to full-time as I could manage, folks. Twelve long years.
Why haven't you answered my e-mail? Answer/Hide
The sheer volume of e-mail I recieve has made it impossible for me to answer it all. I do read everything, and thank you so much for writing. To all my readers, my heart is yours.
